links for 2010-01-20

  • In the recent Putting the Frontline First: smarter government report HM Government set the aim for “the majority of government-published information to be reusable, linked data by June 2011”.

TSO has been working with public sector clients to open up published data in four steps:

Capture: providing processes and tools to allow data to be created in either a structured or semi-structured way

Enhance: providing processes that enhance free text or semi-structured data using text engineering techniques

Transform: converting structured data into formats to publish on the web such as RDF, XHTML+RDFA and ATOM

Deliver: providing web environments that allow both humans and machines to access the data.

The end result is information which is both human and machine readable, helping to enable a semantic web of linked data to meet the government's objectives.
